We are looking for a Mechanical Design Drafter to join a small, highly focused Engineering team based at Westerton’s office in East Tullos, Aberdeen.


This position requires working closely with a team lead Design Engineer on project-based output, from concept through to production; converting ideas into 3D models and producing detailed drawings for manufacture. We seek a ‘self-starter’ able to expand the drawing library of Bottom Hole Assemblies (BHAs) along with connection drawings of older existing equipment.


The Mechanical Design Drafter will collaborate with a multi-disciplined design team and will contribute to other projects involving our technical leading downhole tools, also spending time testing the new designs.


Duties and Responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the improvement of current engineering processes and existing designs
  • Working closely with the Engineering team to meet their requirements
  • Preparation of documentation for manufacture and assembly (drawings and BOMs)
  • Calculating forces (inertia, torque, tensile, shear etc)
  • Producing design solutions to meet customer and internal needs, conforming to safety and legal requirements
  • Designing new products – gear, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, associated wireline products used with cutters
  • 3D CAD Modelling / Draughting on Autodesk Inventor 2019, creating manufacturing DWGs
  • Designing innovative mechanisms to achieve desired manipulation of tools in harsh environs
  • Liaising with workshop and field staff, design engineers, sales team and suppliers


The successful Mechanical Design Drafter will also hold the following qualities:

  • Relevant qualification (HNC, HND or Degree) in Mechanical Engineering, with minimum 5 years post-graduate Mechanical Design experience
  • Strong background in 3D CAD and FEA, ideally Autodesk Inventor and familiarity with Product Data Management software (Vault)
  • Competence in creating manufacturing drawings including application of Geometric and Dimensional Tolerancing
  • Working knowledge of the various methods of manufacture to be employed
  • Ability to work proactively and ‘hands on’ in a demanding environment, providing accurate and timely output to a high standard
  • Ability to develop concepts and make a significant contribution to product design, drawing from knowledge and expertise of leading edge technologies
  • Ability to generate innovative solutions and continuously improve upon existing designs
  • Effective teamworking and communication skills – ability to articulate complex problems with clarity to a technical and non-technical audience, verbally and written
  • Effective management of the full service supply chain
  • DESIRABLE – Experience in machine tool design
  • DESIRABLE – Experience in design and application of various types of geared systems (e.g. worm gears, bevel gears, multistage planetary gear boxes etc)
  • DESIRABLE – Knowledge of downhole / oil and gas tools, in particular e-line tools
  • DESIRABLE – Workshop experience beneficial
